Notes for ROBERT ZANE, SR.:

He reportedly first came to America in 1673 or 1675, then later returned to England or Ireland and returned with John Fenwick to the West Jersey Quaker colony they settled named Newton. (See Harvey Zane, p 113.)

Diane Nichols says Robert Zane Sr. actually never did come to America, yet oddly there is no death record for him or Wilmot in Dublin Quaker records. However, this was very early in the Quaker religion and they may not have begun keeping the meticulous records for which they were known later.

See photocopy of actual record from Society of Friends, Dublin Ireland, obtained by Diane Nichols, transcribed as follows: Robert Zanes Son of Robert Zanes and of Wilmot his wife was born in Yorksham in the County of Devon in the year 1642 and came over with his ------ to Ireland in about the year 1656. A serge weaver he took to wife in Dublin Margaret Hammond Daughter of Thomas Hammond and of Grace his wife of Midlem in Yorkshire in the 9th month 1664. She was born in the year 1641 and came into this Nation with her Brother James, in about the year 1661. Her ---- Husband had issue by her as followsth viz: Two chioldren who both died shortly after their birth. Nathaniel son of the P:(?) Robert Zanes and Margaret his wife was born in Bridefleet or Woodfleet Dublin the 24th of the 8th month 1670. The Hoagland study, p 3, cites Burlington Monthly Meeting which reported him as being "of Elsinbrogh." He was referred to as a yeoman in three of his deeds in 1689. Robert probably came to West New Jersey from Dublin with John Fenwick aboard the Griffin in the fall of 1675. He purchased of John Fenwick in 1676 the 20 acre lot adjoining the Acton lot.

The book "Sketches of the First Emigrant Settlers, Newton Township" by John Clement published in 1877, pp 11-22 reveals much about Robert Zane

and his life. This points out it is not indicated in any of the papers of the Friends records which of his children were by his Indian wife Alice Alday and which by Elizabeth Willis, although in the lineage charts in this study, all are attributed to Elizabeth... which is possibly in error.

Diane Nichols says some records say Leni Lenape was his 1st wife, and the way his children were often described they could have been 1/2 Indian. Other records say Nancy Ann Nolan was his first wife and he had a later marriage to someone whose name is not known, but it was said to have been an unhappy marriage. There is evidently no proof of any of these marriages. Sutor Hist. Musk Co. p705 says his second wife was one of the founders of the Society of Shakers at Lebanon, OH. Diane Nichols says she was the mother of Nancy Robbins. She believes Silas' wife Katherine (McColloch) Ryan later went to Lebanon and helped found the Shakers. Sutor says he died 1790 and was buried on the high bank of the river but in 1827 the bank caved away and the coffin was exposed and removed by his son Noah. Some records call him just Andrew, but he is called William in his father's will.
